Mom. Superhero. Best friend. Protector. Chauffeur. Therapist. Cheerleader. Nurse. Chef. Confidante.
My mom has and still continues to play all of these roles and more for my siblings and I. She has 4 kids and 3 grand babies she would do anything for. She’s the kind of mom who loves unconditionally, has open arms for everyone and is the most selfless person I know. She would genuinely give you her last dollar even if it meant she would do without.
Today I wanted to brag about her and share the five things she has taught me so far in life.
1. Family is everything.
My family is all very close and we tell each other everything. Growing up, we could always tell my mom anything. She never had any judgement, just advice. She’s like a best friend you can tell everything to and laugh with, but her mother instincts kick in when she doesn’t think something is right. Every single morning she texts me “good morning lovely” and no matter how I’m feeling it always brightens my day. We all live crazy, busy lives and can’t see each other as often as I wish, so texting and calling keeps us all connected. One thing about my mom is that she LOVES having everyone over for dinner or BBQs and makes way too much food at holidays! Before we leave she asks if you’ve had enough to eat and she always says, “take some of this food home!” Haha. My mom loves her family more than anything in this world and does so much for all of us.
2. Be kind to others.
She has always taught me to have a big heart and treat others the way I want to be treated. Not everyone is going to like you and that’s okay. Just remember all of the people who do love you. No matter what anyone says about you, if you are genuinely nice and have a kind heart, nobody can take that away from you. “Be grateful. A lot of people have it a lot worse” is something she always says. It is SO true and I never take any day for granted. “Work hard and be kind” is my life motto!
3. Be independent and work hard.
She raised my sisters and I to be independent and work hard. She never had a choice but to work hard and take care of us. Having a strong woman to look up to has shaped me into the woman I am today. I definitely get my work ethic from her. No matter how I’m feeling, I get dressed and show up. My husband says I’m the hardest working person he knows and I have my momma to thank for that!
4. Never give up.
My mom has always supported us and pushed us to be our best and not give up on our dreams. She has always said no dream is too big and to reach for the stars and just go for it. There are many days when I want to give up on things, but it just isn’t in me to do it. I always wanted to try something new and no matter what it was (Remember when I was into skateboarding! Haha me?!) she always supported it! She never missed a performance, game or whatever it was we were involved in. She was and is still always there cheering us on in life.
5. Laughter is the best medicine.
My mom is so wild and funny, but if she wasn’t it would be so weird to see her any other way. She says and does funny stuff in stores and you just can’t help but laugh. My mom loves Star Wars and talks in a yoda voice and it’s the funniest thing. My brother has the funniest laugh and always laughs at her silliness. My youngest nephew is definitely a miniature version of my mom. He always does stuff to get everyone to laugh just like she does. If we’re sad or upset she always has to say something funny to get us to smile through the tears. Even when she was walking me down the aisle, we have the cheesiest smiles on our face because she was making me laugh so I wouldn’t cry and ruin my makeup! We always laugh when we’re together.
My mom is beautiful, funny, smart and has a heart of gold. I can only hope I’ll be half the mom she is one day. She has so much energy, is full of life and anyone should be lucky to know her. I’m forever grateful to have a mom like her!
